This is not really much of an
"adventure", but it's a good place to bring you up to date on our medical stuff!
A long time ago we went to a
different Vet in Mankato. Her name was Dr. Jennifer. Leo spent a lot
of time with her for awhile dealing with a bowel
disease. Well, he recovered from that just
fine, but about a year ago we both started having some other
problems. Anyway, to make a long
rather tedious story, short, Dr. Jennifer had some family issues
and had to leave her practice in Mankato. My human did not
"take to" the new vet. So.............we now go to the
Nicollet New Ulm Clinic in New Ulm and Dr. Sharon Hurley is our vet!
Sharon has been a vet for 22 years and her father was
a vet before her! So we figure she should know something by
now! :) Besides, you can tell she likes kitties :)
Leo received a lot of tests and it turns out that
he had a touch of Asthma!
So we've treated for that. Then his left eye started
watering and Dr. Hurley discovered I had a scratch on my eye and it had
ulcerated! So we doctored for that. Then Gizzmo's eyes
started acting up. She got very sick and had to go in for a shot and then
medication for her eyes!
After successfully managing the ulceration,
Leo's eyes took another turn.
It now looks as though he may have the Herpes Virus in the same eye that
had the injury. There is really no "cure" for this and the
various treatments may or may not get positive results. Since it is a virus, it does not
respond to antibiotics. We are currently trying L-Lysine food supplement
which has been shown to have some success in combating this condition.
The human sprinkles it on our food. (So, even though it's Leo's problem,
we both eat it!) The only
problem is that after a few days, Leo "make pancakes" in the litter box
(that means he gets the diarrhea folks!). So then we have to stop
administering the L-Lysine until it clears up (sigh!) The good news was
when I went in for my check ups, Sharon thought it was making
progress. Then on July 4 of 2001, the scab that had been
in the middle of my eye fell off!! Yay!!!
We will continue the L-Lysine and a regular rinse with a sterile eye irrigating solution. Hopefully it will continue
to mend. Undoubtedly, my sight in that eye will be somewhat impaired.
And I will probably always have to take L-Lysine (and "make more
pancakes" in the process). But I can
still see, and am able to play, chase my sister and pester the human! :)
Anyway, my human thought it
would be a good idea to add my new vet's photo to my website, since she
is almost a member of the family! This little sequence was
taken during my visits to resolve the ulceration and gives you some indication of how focused
Dr. Hurley is! You can click on each of the thumbnails to see
the larger photo :)
