Leo Here!  My friends call me "Bud".  Welcome to Vernon Center, Minnesota!   For those of you who don't know, Minnesota went through a major election for Governor in 1999.   I'm not a political kitty, but 1999 was  different!   This is the story of how me and my sisters, Gizzmo and Lorraine, met the man who was eventually elected to be Governor of our Great State!  You see, the family of the new First Lady of the State of Minnesota, is from Vernon Center!  That's were we live!  So, on the Sunday before the election and as part of Jesse's Victory Tour, he and his wife Terry and the Lieutenant Governor elect came to Vernon Center to the farm of Terry's grandparents, Wes and Irene Cornish. 

Meowmie was going to take some pictures to upload to Jesse's website, so we got out there early.  Lorraine, Gizzmo and I took our position by the edge of the driveway to wait for Jesse to arrive!  Gizzmo was very excited!  She just kept staring at the road!   Lorraine is a Democrat, so she decided to wear a disguise just in case anyone from "Skip"  Humphrey's  campaign drove by!  Like anyone couldn't tell it was Lorraine under that fake nose, moustache and hat!  I assumed my usual "cool" demeanor and acted like I really didn't care if he showed up or not!   Of course, I was as excited as everyone else!    Then we saw the RV approach! 

We ran up to the house as quickly as our little legs could carry us!  I took my position on top of a great big John Deere Tractor someone drove in for the occasion.

When Jesse got out of the RV and worked his way toward the house, he spotted me right away and gave me a big wave!  "Hi there Leo!" he said.  Boy was I ever excited!   I meowed right back: "Hello there, big guy"!!  I wanted to wave back, but the top of that tractor was slippery and I was hanging on tight, trying not to slip off.  Thank goodness, the human remembered to get me a Jesse button.  I displayed it proudly! 

We all went up to the house after that and Jesse began to speak to the crowd.  He made a great speech!  Gizzmo had crawled up on the roof so she could get a real good view of the event.  At one point she  got so excited, she leapt right off the roof, landed on Jesse's shoulder and gave him a big smooch on his head!  Here she is in full flight!  She just barely missed the new First Lady's head!

I in the meantime, sat on the railing right behind the First Couple, and cheered his every word.  If I'm not mistaken, in this next picture, he was vowing to support every kitty's right to become self-sufficient and not dependent upon their government or their humans!  I cheered wildly!  I think Queen Midnight ought to consider Jesse for honorary CLAW membership!!

This next picture is one of my very favorites.  The Lieutenant Governor elect --- her name is Mae Schunk, spotted me.   She picked me up and took me over to meet Terry and Jesse.  In this picture you can see Mae carrying me while Terry is obviously taken with me!  Even Jesse appears amused by the affection I am getting from the two most important women in his life!   I was kind of embarrassed, since this was not my most flattering pose!!  But I gotta tell ya, anyone who would take the time to hug a cat in the middle of an election campaign is bound to make a great First Lady!  Don't you think?  I think the "human" better be extra nice to me or I might just decide to take a position in the new administration!  Hey Meowmie, can ya spell "First Cat" ?!!!

Well the event was drawing to an end.   I was sitting on bench kind of waiting for things to wrap up.

All of a sudden, I spotted him!  He was the biggest, ugliest thing I had ever seen!

It was Mike Cornish's big dumb dog!   And it looked to me as if ol' Mike had forgotten to feed him!   Well, that was enough for me!

I ran back down that gravel road to the safety of my house in Vernon Center, just as quickly as I could!  Fortunately that dog spotted Lorraine!  I told her that disguise stunk!   You shoulda seen her go!  I don't think she's moved that fast since Skip Humprey's father was elected Vice President!  (heeee, heee!)   Gizzmo hid under Meowmie's truck and rode back with her.  Anyway, Jesse Ventura was elected Governor and now we all have a friend in the State house!  Con-Cat-U-Lations Governor Jesse and First Lady Terry!  If ya ever need any advise on Cat Care, just give old Leo "The Bud" a Meow!
